love hearts

Although my studio didn’t take part in Cambridge Open Studios this year, we are still very much involved and that’s why I decided to take part in a loveheart painting challenge to raise money for the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity‘s new hospice. My loveheart was on display in my studiomate Neil Warmsley‘s Open Studio that he this year shared with stone carver Keith Bailey. The hearts are all going to be auctioned off later in the year so keep an eye on the Love Your New Hospice Facebook page to see all the lovehearts as they appear and later on for news of the auction!

inky quadrupeds

Here are some inky drawings featuring creatures that don’t have an awful lot more in common than the number of feet they possess and the fact that I like drawing them! Above is a wingless dragon and below a couple of horses and…well I’m not altogether certain what the one at the bottom is. I made these with my favourite exhausted 1 cm wedge brush and black acrylic ink. I think these creatures are trying to get me to write them a story…

further experiments in ink…

I have been doing some more work lately using splodgy ink and a feathery brush. I quite like the results and I thought I’d try adding other collage layers digitally. The black dog above is the result of ink and collage combined and the creatures below are ink applied with brush and dip pen. There’s a story there, I’m just figuring out what it is…

scruffy garden dog

I like scruffy dogs, they are the best kind if you ask me. Here is one that’s been padding around the garden lately, sniffing everything and contemplating life. I think he might be looking for a friend…

cats and dogs

I’m rather enjoying playing with putting patterns and drawings together at the moment. Here are a couple of creatures who have come into being of late who definitely need to find homes…

Watercolour and FW ink love

I have been away from my studio recently and travelling light with just my tiny water colour set to keep me company. I had forgotten how lovely water colour is and how different it is to acrylic ink, which is what I use most of the time for illustrations. I love both mediums in different ways; FW inks are incredibly vivid and very versatile, but water colour has a beautiful quality to it. The colours are subtle and each one seems to settle on the page in a slightly different way. I am by no means an expert but I do like to play – here are some patterns I’ve been working on, the first three were painted with water colour and the ones beneath that are FW ink.

Woof!

It’s high time I redressed the balance and showed that I DO like dogs every bit as much as cats. Well, almost every bit as much… Here are a couple of new pictures for my portfolio featuring friendly hounds painted in watercolour.
