I recently wanted to create some new work for my portfolio and since I love book covers so much, I thought I’d do some of my own. The books don’t actually exist yet but that may change!

Watercolour and FW ink love
I have been away from my studio recently and travelling light with just my tiny water colour set to keep me company. I had forgotten how lovely water colour is and how different it is to acrylic ink, which is what I use most of the time for illustrations. I love both mediums in different ways; FW inks are incredibly vivid and very versatile, but water colour has a beautiful quality to it. The colours are subtle and each one seems to settle on the page in a slightly different way. I am by no means an expert but I do like to play – here are some patterns I’ve been working on, the first three were painted with water colour and the ones beneath that are FW ink.
Open Studios 2015
I know it’s only February but it’s time to start thinking about Open Studios again! We’ll be opening our studio here in Derby Road for the last two weeks in July but the deadline for the image to put in the OS guide is this Saturday. So I am getting my skates on and trying to produce a picture for the guide which will look good tiny. I’m not quite there yet, but here is my first attempt:

Brush Pen Kitty
I was given a brush pen the other day and here is a little cat from my first round of experimentations. I rather like the brush pen though I haven’t really figured out how to use it properly yet. It seems to make me want to do wet-in-wet drawings though it’s probably most useful for sketching outdoors in combination with watercolour pencils. I shall have to keep experimenting.

I have been working hard this week trying to finish the covers for the next two Maisie Hitchins books so I’m feeling in need of a little light relief! This little fellow strolled out of my sketchbook…
Absolutely terrifying Halloween Fimo creatures….!
Next weekend I’ll be holding a Fimo demonstration in the art department of Jarrolds department store in Norwich. In case you have never heard of Fimo, it is a polymer clay, which is to say a special kind of modelling clay which you can cook in the oven so that your models turn hard become permanent. Fimo is great stuff and I’ve been making things from it since I was a tiddler.
Fimo demos are always lots of fun as I show children and adults how to make all sorts of colourful creations from model animals to jewellery and everything in between. This weekend I will be limbering up my fimo fingers by making Christmas creatures for the demo, but for now here are some little horrors I made earlier…
Nice Patterns
These are some patterns I’ve been working on recently, I’m not quite sure what to do with them yet but I’m sure I’ll work it out. These little characters were all made using FW inks and scissors then scanned in and rearranged in the computer.
